Things you can do with plastic pop bottles

Posted on 23.58

Don't throw away your old plastic pop bottles. Try some of these ideas to recycle or re-use them. No-Bending-Required Door Stop - I cut an old soda bottle in half. I put a hole in the middle of the cap and secured the "stick" from some old blinds in it (a dowel will work), this is the handle. I then weighted (not too heavy, you need to be able to lift it!)the bottom and glued the top back on. The bottle stands up with the "handle" sticking out the top. To decorate it I "wrapped" it in satin and lace and secured it with some decorative cording and roses. The "handle" sticks up to almost door knob level and my husband really likes the fact that he can stop the door open easily (I like the way it looks!) Contributed by Terri Poore

Ice Packs - I use a large pop bottle (2-litre) and fill it with water about 2/3 full then freeze it. That way I always have ice packs on hands. (Bonus: when the ice packs start to melt, I have clean and ice cold water to drink). Using small size pop bottles (250 mL, 300 mL, 350 mL, etc.), I fill them about 1/2 with water and freeze. The next day, I fill with fresh tap water or juice. That way, my son gets cold drinks for the day without having to bring bulky ice packs in his lunch box: one half for the morning recess and the other half for the afternonn recess. Contributed by Lynne

Potpourri Holder - Cut the bottom from the bottle. Fill with pot pourri and cover the open part with curtain lace and glue to the outside of the bottle. Cover the raw edges of the curtain lace with either ribbon or lace. Contributed by Boston, wootton@ozemail.com.au.

M&M lolly jar - Cut the middle from the bottle and keep the top and bottom. Rejoin these (with hot glue). Glue lace or ribbon or both to cover the join. Paint the lid or decorate with lace or ribbon. Contributed by Boston, wootton@ozemail.com.au.

Plastic Butterfly - Make a stencil using a piece of cardboard in the shape of a butterfly, about 4x4inch or so. You trace the butterfly out onto the bottle and then you can cut it out. Down the center of the butterfly you can bend it, so it has its arches. You then can paint/design the butterfly in any colour of your choice. To stick them up, you can use putty. Contributed by hali_79@hotmail.com

Ocean in a Bottle - Take 1/2 bottle of oil, half water. Add food coloring and glitter. It is pretty cool, and works well with smaller bottles for babies to play with. Contributed by Starr, jokettes@ameritech.net

Substitue Funnel - Cut off the bottom of the plastic bottle. Turn the bottle upside down and voila! a handy funnel to use for putting oil in your car, or filling jugs, etc.

Substitute for Sand Bags - If you've ever used sand bags for weight in the winter you know they can be very messy when they break or just a plain hassle to move around. Put the sand in 2 liter bottles (must be dry not frozen). These are easily moved and in extreme weather when stuck on a slick spot I just grab a bottle and sprinkle sand under the tires, I'm on my way in seconds. Contributed by Belinda C., Beestir9@aol.com

Bathtup Submarine - Cut three lines in a shape like this, |_| as a door and put your little action figures in a go for a swim. Contributed by MPicker356@aol.com

Small thingee holder - Cut the top off 2 litre bottles so they stand 6-8 inches tall. With a small screw and washer, screw them to a 1x4" board. Screw that board onto the wall in your workshop to hold a wide variety of tools. Contributed by Dave Sturby, dsturbr@sk.sympatico.ca

Slalom Course - Fill up partially with sand, and make a slalom course for your skateboarders, inliners, or for a bike rodeo. Contributed by Dave Sturby, dsturbr@sk.sympatico.ca

Spray Pumps - Some bottles can be fitted with a spray pump (ala windex) to spray a dilute latex paint mix. Good for small projects , clean nozzle with clear water and re-use. Contributed by Dave Sturby, dsturbr@sk.sympatico.ca

How to Make Lamps and Vases From Bottles

Posted on 23.44

All you need to convert an old bottle into a lamp is a bottle adapter lamp kit which you can find at your local hardware / lighting store, and a lamp shade. The easiest method is to leave the lamp cord running from the socket instead of being concealed in the base.

Your kit should include drilled corks in different sizes, a spindle, harp, sock with cover, lamp cord with plug, and nuts and washers to put them all together. If the bottle is tall and slender you'll want to fill it with marbles, small stones, shells, sand, etc., to give it some ballast. Another option is to detach the harp from the socket assembly and use a lamp shade that will snap directly over the light bulb. That will the lamp's center of gravity.

Select the drilled cork that fits your bottle neck. Insert the spindle and secure washers and knurled nuts on both ends. Then twist the cork into the bottle.

Place the harp cradle over the spindle. Screw the socket base over the spindle and tighten the setscrew. Insert the cord through the socket base and strip the ends.

Attach the wire ends to the socket connections, wrapping clockwise before tightening the terminal screws. Install the socket cover and snap the assembly into the socket base.

Unscrew the finial on the harp, place a shade over the spindle, and replace the finial.

To hide the cord inside the bottle:
With a hacksaw, cut a 4" length from the threaded part of the spindle. Screw it into the hole in the metal arm attached to the socket, leaving enough room for the wires that will pass through.

Push the bottom of the spindle through a 1" washer, the drilled cork, and another washer. Secure with a nut.

Drill a hole in the base of the bottle. Push the sripped end of the electric cord through the hole and up through the neck of the bottle, then through bottom of the spindle and out the top. Connect the wires to the screws on the socket. Pull the wire taut and replace the socket cover.

Recycle Those Old CD's

Posted on 23.35

"Scratch Board" - I like taking my unused AOL etc...cd freebies and painting them with either an acrylic or fabric paint. I then lightly draw/trace a design onto the dried surface and proceed to scratch onto the design. This removes the paint and leaves the shiny rainbow part exposed ... voila you have a unique "scratch board" ... ( you can use a thick sewing needle ,pencil or end of a small paintbrush) Contributed by J.snuggles

Drop spindle for spinning wool - You need roughly two cd's (aol's free ones work very well) a dowel about 12 - 16 inches long some rubber tubing and a small metal hook. Place the rubber tubing around the dowel and place in the center of the cd's about four inches from the top. screw metal hook into the top and spin. Contributed by Rachel Lapine, dragonflyeye@home.com

Christmas Light Reflectors - We use them as reflectors for Christmas lights outside....the c-7 size bulbs fit thru the opening and then we put the light string on outdoor stakes and line a sidewalk...looks REALLY cool when it is lightly raining...the clear colored bulbs work best, but the opaque ones will do. Contributed by Cathy Bruce Purdy, cpurdy1@austin.rr.com.

Use as Reflectors - Fasten to a wooden stake by pre-drilling and screwing/nailing it to the wood, shiny side OUT, and use as reflectors along your sidewalk or driveway. Contributed by Lala, wtedward@tusco.net

Candle Display - Use cd's shiny side up to sit small pillar or votive candles on. The reflection off the cd's is great for centerpieces on buffet tables, especially during the holidays. Contributed by pk, starchild@netrax.net

Sun Catcher - The sun's rays reflects all sorts of color off of them. Glue 2 CDs together (label sides to one another) To make holes for hanging, use a large enough needle or a nail. Use a pair of pliers to hold onto needle or nail and hold over an open flame to heat, then push through the two discs when hot enough. Run some decorative cord through the hole(s), decorate both sides, but nothing too large or you'll ruin the effect and the purpose of why you are making. Contributed by LuLu, LuLu5841@aol.com

Christmas wreath. - Instructions here

Christmas ornament ideas - For our company party (we have a small staff), I am using glitter glue to make festive designs on the shiny side of the cd's. We will slide decorate string through the hole of the cd, and tie a knot to make a loop, long enough to hang from a Christmas tree. Then we're taking Polaroid pictures of each couple. We will use fancy edger scissors to cut around the pictures and paste on the center of the decorated cd. If there is a label on the backside of the cd, you could cover with wrapping paper or construction paper and decorate with glitter glue, sequins, beads or whatever! Contributed by tammynak@bigfoot.com

More Christmas ornament ideas - Using a permanent marking pen, Xmas shaped sponges and\or small simple stencils, I traced small stockings, bells, trees, stars and snowman on the shiny side of the cd and then cut them out using a small electric scroll saw. The key was to go slow. Then I used the dremel to smooth the edges and punch the holes to slip cord through to hang them. The finishing touch is to paint the label side with acrylic paint sponged on, or use snow texture paint, or glue and glitter. The commercial cd's show a pretty silvery color and writeable cds a lovely gold color. You can personalize the small ornaments with kids names written with a metallic permanent marker or acrylic paint. Or string a whole bunch together for a wonderful homemade garland. Contributed by Liana, liana@direct.ca

Spinning tops for kids - Adult, take a knife and push through hole in CD making slit each side. Force a penny half way through hole. Spin CD on the edge of the penny. Enhance by gluing dowel to one side of penny to make it easier to spin. Contributed by Steve Holder, shunra@ibm.net

Borders - In a teen's bedroom they make a nice substitute for a wallpaper border (it takes ALOT though). If you don't have that many you could also use them for a window or mirror border. Put them side by side or overlap them.
